The Beefy Growth of OSI Group
The story of the food company OSI group is truly a classic American story. Immigrants come from another country, settle down in the US, then go on to create a highly successful company. In OSI’s case, the company was founded by German immigrant Otto Kolschowsky in 1909 at Oak Park, Illinois. The first store was a simple family owned meat store that served the residents in the area. In its early years it was named Otto&Sons, and soon the company opened more stores and gained the reputation of selling good quality meat products.
The big break came in the mid-1950’s when the company was chosen to be one of the beef providers for a little-known company at that time, known as McDonald’s. And the rest, as they say, is history. Otto and Sons changed their name to OSI and the small company from Illinois grew its fortunes along with McDonald’s. Not satisfied with just being a meat supplier, the company also went into the meat processing business, becoming the giant it is today. It also purchased other meat producing companies such as a Tysons food plant near Chicago last year. This was a boon for the employees working at Tyson’s because the plant was slated to close down.
OSI Industries is a company that takes cleanliness and hygiene in all aspects of its business very seriously. This attitude paid off recently when it won the Globe of Honor from the British Safety Council. This award is only given to companies that follow strict standards of safety, hygiene, and environmental standards. Today, OSI is growing from strength to strength as it makes its presence known internationally. The company employs approximately 20,000 people. Despite this, they have not lost the touch when it comes to dealing with smaller businesses and giving them tailor made solutions.
