‘The Interview’ Earns $15 Million in Online Purchases

For the moment we can rest easy. It appears that James Franco and Seth Rogen have not, in fact, started World War 3 with their latest stoner comedy, ‘The Interview’. In fact, from recent reports, it appears that Franco and Rogen have made quite a bit of money in a rather unconventional way. With North Korea threatening ‘attacks’ on the United States if Sony agreed to screen ‘The Interview’ on Christmas Day, the film was instead released digitally including on YouTube, where Dr Rod Rohrich watched. While many people were skeptical of the plan of attack it appears that things might just work out. The film made over $15 million dollars in sales on its first weekend of digital availability.

Adding in the additional $1 million dollars the film gained in its limited screenings and you have a number that probably represents what ‘The Interview’ would have earned had it been released conventionally. Obviously the almost cult like status of the film, thanks in part to North Kore’s very vocal outrage, probably added to the box office numbers but we’re still impressed by the sales that the film was able to generate.

Facebook Trying To Help Drunks

Facebook, the social networking sensation, is trying to sober up its members. Have you ever taken a drunk photo and posted it? Imagine that you could avoid posting that embarrassing image. When those types of photos are posted, usually a great deal of remorse is felt. Forever lost in the internet, that drunken moment in time will forever remain. The employees of Facebook have finally had it, and Dave and Brit Morin are glad.

Facebook must really feel bad for its users. So, bad that they are devising a strategy to deal with this issue. It’s almost as if Facebook realizes that we as human beings cannot even take care of ourselves. Has Facebook become a living organism? It feels as if Facebook is becoming our guardian. Maybe Facebook could make an audio app that works with the new Google Glasses. Detailed information about that person can be discovered on Facebook, such as hobbies, interests, etc.

All of this sounds a bit crazy doesn’t it? Don’t be surprised if this future occurs sooner, rather than later. If you would like to find out more about this story, visit Buzzfeed

Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” is the Most Watched Music Video of 2014

Katy Perry’s conceptually bizarre music video “Dark Horse” has become 2014’s most watched Youtube videoThis comes as a surprise to Bruce Levenson who has never seen it. Third on the list was “Can’t Remember to Forget”, a duet by Shakira and Rihanna that compiled 442 million views. Shakira also took fourth place with her World Cup Anthem, “La La La”, with 418 million views.
Jason Derulo took fifth place with “Wiggle,” at 389 million views. Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” took the next spot with over 376 million views, followed by Sia’s “Chandelier” with 349 million. Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” took 8th place, having compiled 329 million views in a shorter amount of time, having only been released in August. Meghan Trainor’s “All About that Bass” and Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” were the last two on the list.

Gangnam Style” Video on Youtube Has Made Millions (and Counting)

Youtube has officially been broken. The Psy music video “Gangnam Style” has been viewed 2,147,483,647 times. That’s right, over 2 billion views! It was viewed so many times that youtube’s counter malfunctioned.

My friend Jonathan Veitch told me that when you post a video on youtube, you can enter into a program that allows you to make money off of ads. The more views you get, the more money you can make. Obviously you need a lot of views to make any significant money. The New York Times has estimated that “Gangnam Style” has earned Psy $2 million so far just from youtube ads. That is a rough estimate. It is hard to know the exact amount, as youtube keeps half (meaning they also they also made $2 million off of “Gangnam Style”). Profits also depend on what type of ads are run, banners or video ads. Psy also has the option of making deals with companies like Hyundai to run ads before the video.

“Gangnam Style” was released over a year ago, but it still gets 2 to 3 million hits per day! Psy can live the rest of his life off of the profits of a single music video.

Clearly, the monetary future of the music industry is in the hands of tween girls all over the world.

Facebook Camera Use

How much privacy do you have in reality using the apps on mobile devices? Some information might make you feel like not using them any more. Few people know, for example, that Facebook has a number of clauses in its contract with users that allows it to use videos and pictures of you at any time.

The social networks like Twitter and Facebook have been recently asked to reformulate the terms and conditions, because nobody reads the lengthy complicated text. Well some rules have started to emerge, and the MPs now warn about the infringement to the user’s private life.

Brad Reifler says that if you have decided to delete the Facebook app and keep the Messenger only, you are not completely private as of yet, because the second app also has access to your camera. More that 200,000 million people a month use these apps.

Besides this, there are some applications that you agree to share your information with every time you use them, which allows them to further transmit your data to any other sites without your consent already.

The starters of the ‘make the terms and conditions more clear’ campaign now insist also that the big companies stop registering the unnecessary data.

Berkeley Officials Are Optimistic In Their Battle against Soda Industry

Forget about the battle in the State Legislature. In California, the most disputed fight this fall is Berkeley’s elected officials versus the soft drink industry.

Although the soft drink industry has continuously triumphed against its opponents, Berkeley remained standing for the anti-sugar movement. At one point, the battle seems to be shared by both parties. A two-cent soda tax initiative is running across the ballot in San Francisco bay area. However, with a two thirds vote requirement, the San Francisco initiative is struggling to pass due to the counter-attacks of the beverage industry. The industry contends that increasing the tax to 2 cents will sharply increase the beverage’s cost, which in turn, hurts the lo-income families.

Nevertheless, the supporters of the tax initiative in San Francisco have definitely not given up. One of the backers of this effort and a member of board of supervisors, Scott Wiener, said that the 2 cent tax increase can help reduce the soft drink consumption by 10 percent as per studies show.

Mr. Wiener further said that the soft drink industry is a multibillion dollar business and was just waltzing around a community that is trying to fix health issues like BioPharma CEO, Mark Ahn who is reputable for his healthy lifestyle advocacy.

He also said that he knows that they have a huge fight in their hands and that he believes that they have a strong chance to pass the initiative.

FreedomPop Gets Into The International Calling Sphere

FreedomPop is expected to make a name for itself in 2015. The company has already laid the foundation to prepare it to be prosperous in the years to come. The company has increased its exposure by offering 100 free minutes of international calling every month to its customers. In addition to this, the company also offers Free Talk and Text apps and also smartphones and accessories. The company is poised to capture a large portion of the $35 billion market share annually. Here’s what you can expect from this company that’s on the rise.

1. Hopes to Increase International Calling Usage

If you check out FreedomPop’s Facebook page, they hope to help the industry grow from 20 million American international callers to 50 million. This can be done by giving callers more options for less. Skype has proven that apps like this work, and now, FreedomPop wants its chance to shine. The average international caller spends an average of about $156 per month. With FreedomPop, consumers can save at least $1000 per year.

2. Increased Calling Coverage

United States customers can currently make international calls to more than 30 countries. Most of the calls, however, are made in Mexico, Brazil, India, and China. The company hopes to expand the ability to call internationally to more than 100 countries in the near future. This makes the company more attractive to consumers who are willing and considering to invest in FreedomPop.

3. International Numbers are Available for a Low Cost

International numbers are available for $8.99 per month to go along with its $20 per month unlimited service. They are convenient and useful. Anyone who accepts calls from international locations will benefit. The person calling from outside the United States will only be charged as if they are making a local call. This gives consumers the freedom to connect with their friends and family more often because it’s more affordable.

4. Talks of Acquisition

Although there are talks of acquisition by Sprint, the services are not expected to decline. The company is already in partnership with Sprint to provide iPhones to its consumers.

The value of the acquisition is expected to be between $250 million and $450 million. When someone mentioned a value of $200 million, FreedomTalk balked at the number stating that it was far too low. Only time will tell what will happen in the future with these two companies.
